First Day of the General Chapter

The 213th General Chapter of the Order of Carmelites opened in Il Carmelo in Sassone, Rome, Italy on Tuesday morning, September 3, 2013. 111 Friars from the five continents gathered representing nearly every country where the Carmelite Order has communities and ministers.

The Chapter began with the Mass of the Holy Spirit, led by the Prior General, the Most Reverend Fernando Millan Romeral, O.Carm., and concelebrated by the members of the General Council. The Prior General welcomed all of the capitulars, as well as the guests, secretaries and others present. He exhorted the brothers to nurture three attitudes throughout the Chapter: humility, wisdom and generosity, and to trust in the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Before the altar was a newly-written icon of Our Lady of Mount Carmel surrounded by images of St. Albert of Jerusalem, St. Teresa of Jesus, St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi, and Blessed Titus Brandsma. At the conclusion of the Mass, the brothers in their white mantles, processed with the Icon to the Chapter Hall singing the Carmelite Litany of the Saints. In the Chapter Hall, Father Fernando blessed the Icon, the Veni Creator Spiritus was chanted, and the Chapter officially opened. Later in the morning, in the next session, Sister Miriam Tamiano, O.Carm., Prioress of Cerreto, gave a theological reflection and presentation of the Icon which was made in that Monastery (click here to read her full presentation). 

After the presentation of Sister Miriam, the Chapter elected the Most Reverend Joseph Chalmers, O.Carm., Prior General from 1995 to 2007 as the President of the Chapter. He will preside until the new General is elected later in the Chapter.

In the following session, the message to the Chapter from His Holiness Pope Francis was read. In beautiful words, the Holy Father reminded the Order that keeping alive its contemplative life and sharing it with the Church, was an important part of the contemporary mission of the Order. His words were uplifting as he urged us to keep to our pilgrim way see our allegiance to Jesus Christ as love, prayer and mission (click here to read the Pope’s Letter).

The officials of the Chapter previously arranged – Moderators, Facilitators, Secretaries, Revisers of the Acts, and those who will prepare the final message – were announced. The rest of the afternoon consisted of the report of the outgoing Prior General, as well as the approval of the Ordo Capituli and Agenda. The report of Father Fernando left all with many points to ponder, and certainly we will return to his many themes over the next twenty days. 

The first day of the Chapter saw a good beginning to the journey, under the theme “A word of hope and salvation”: living the charism and mission of Carmel today”.

Primer Día del Capítulo General

El 213º Capítulo General de la Orden de los Carmelitas se inauguró en Il Carmelo en Sassone, Roma, Italia, la mañana del martes 3 de setiembre de 2013. Ciento once frailes de cinco continentes se reunieron como representantes de casi cada país donde la Orden Carmelita tiene comunidades y ministerios.

El Capítulo comenzó con la Misa del Espíritu Santo, presidida por el Prior General, Reverendísimo Fernando Millán Romeral, O. Carm., y concelebrada por los miembros del Consejo General. El Prior General dio la bienvenida a todos los capitulares, así como a los invitados, secretarios y otras personas presentes. Exhortó a los hermanos a cultivar tres actitudes durante el capítulo: humildad, sabiduría y generosidad, y a confiar en la inspiración del Espíritu Santo. Ante el altar se colocó un icono recién escrito de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, rodeada por las figuras de San Alberto de Jerusalén, Santa Teresa de Jesús, Santa María Magdalena de Pazzi, y del Beato Tito Brandsma. Al término de la misa, los hermanos vestidos, en sus capas blancas, marcharon en procesión ​​con el icono hacia la Sala Capitular cantando las letanías de los santos carmelitas. En la sala capitular, el P. Fernando bendijo el icono, se cantó el Veni Creator Spiritus y se inauguró el Capítulo oficialmente. Más tarde en la mañana, en la siguiente sesión de reuniones, la Madre Miriam Tamiano, O.Carm., Priora de Cerreto, ofreció una reflexión teológica e hizo la presentación del icono que se escribió en ese monasterio. Después de la presentación de la Madre Miriam, el Capítulo eligió al Reverendísimo Joseph Chalmers, O.Carm., Prior General de 1995 a 2007, como Presidente del Capítulo. Él presidirá hasta que el nuevo General sea elegido más adelante en el Capítulo.

En la siguiente sesión, se leyó el mensaje al Capítulo de Su Santidad el Papa Francisco. En hermosas palabras, el Santo Padre recordó a la Orden que debe mantener viva su vida contemplativa y compartirla con la Iglesia, pues ésta es una parte importante de la misión actual de la Orden. Sus palabras fueron edificantes cuando nos instó a mantener nuestra peregrinación, a ver nuestra fidelidad a Jesucristo como el amor, la oración y la misión. Se anunció a los oficiales del Capítulo organizados previamente: moderadores, facilitadores, secretarios, revisores de las actas, y los que prepararán el mensaje final. El resto de la tarde consistió en el informe del Prior General saliente, así como la aprobación del Ordo Capituli y la Agenda. El informe del P. Fernando dejó a todos con muchos puntos a reflexionar, y desde luego vamos a volver a muchos de sus temas en los próximos veinte días.

El primer día del Capítulo vio un buen comienzo para el camino, bajo el lema "Una palabra de esperanza y de salvación: vivir el carisma y la misión de Carmel hoy".

Primo giorno del Capitolo Generale

Preso il Carmelo di Sassone (Roma, Italia) si è aperto il 213° Capitolo Generale dell’Ordine dei Carmelitani. Martedì mattina, 3 settembre 2013, 111 frati dai cinque continenti si sono riuniti in rappresentanza di quasi tutti i Paesi dove l’Ordine Carmelitano ha comunità e ministeri.

Il Capitolo è iniziato con una S. Messa allo Spirito Santo presieduta del Priore Generale, il Rev.mo P. Fernando Millan Romeral, O. Carm., e concelebrata da tutti i componenti del Consiglio Generale. Il P. Generale ha dato il benvenuto a tutti i capitolari, a tutti gli ospiti e allo staff dei segretari. Il P. Generale ha esortato a coltivare tre atteggiamenti per tutto il capitolo: l’umiltà, la saggezza e la generosità e di avere fiducia nell’ispirazione dello Spirito Santo. Vicino all’altare c’era una icone della Madonna del Carmine circondata dall’immagine di S. Alberto di Gerusalemme, S. Teresa di Gesù, S. Maria Maddalena de Pazzi e dal Beato Tito Brandsma. Dopo la S. Messa i frati in cappa bianca e cantando le Litanie dei Santi hanno portato in processione l’icona dalla cappella alla sala capitolare. Qui P. Fernando ha benedetto l’icona ed è stato cantato il Veni creator Spiritus. In questo modo è stato aperto ufficialmente il Capitolo. Nella sessione successiva, il mattino seguente, Sr. Miriam Tamiano O. Carm., Priora del monastero di Cerreto, ha presentato una riflessione teologica sulla icone fatta dalle suore del suo monastero (clicca qui per leggere la presentazione completa.).

Dopo la presentazione di Sr. Miriam, il Capitolo ha eletto l Rev,mo P. Joseph Chalmers, O. Carm., Priore Generale dal 1995 al 2007 come Presidente del Capitolo.

Nella sessione successiva è stato letto il messaggio che Sua Santità Papa Francesco ha indirizzato al Capitolo. Con espressioni molto belle, il Papa ha ricordato all’Ordine di mantenere viva la vita contemplativa e condividerla con la Chiesa perché questa è una parte importante della missione dell’Ordine oggi. Le parole del Papa sono state molto incoraggianti nell’incitarci a continuare il nostro pellegrinaggio ispirati dal nostro modo di vedere la nostra alleanza con Gesù Cristo come amore, preghiera e missione (clicca qui per leggere la lettera completa).

Sono stati annunciati gli ufficiali del Capitolo: moderatori, facilitatoti, segretari, revisori degli atti e coloro che dovranno preparare il messaggio finale. Il resto del pomeriggio è stato dedicato alla relazione del P. Generale uscente e all’approvazione dell’Ordo Capituli e dell’Agenda. La relazione di ha lascito a tutti molti punti su cui riflettere sui quali certamente egli ritornerà nei prossimi venti giorni.

Il primo giorno del Capitolo è stato un buon inizio del percorso tracciato dal tema “una parola di speranza e di salvezza”: vivere oggi il carisma e la missione del Carmelo.
