General Chapter: 9 and 10 of September 2013

The topic of today’s morning session had finances as its theme. Addressing this topic, Fr. Tomas McClain, Bursar General of the Jesuits, was invited to speak at this meeting. The presenter gave some ideas on the meaning of poverty today. The theme presented was entitled "Poverty and the Role of the Bursar Today." In his presentation, he touched on tough issues such as: the role of the Bursar, and the meaning we give today to the terms “poverty” and “simplicity.” At the end of the report, a discussion was opened on the issue of poverty and how we are called to live it as consecrated religious in today's society.

The first part of the morning having concluded, the Chapter returned to the conference room and this time the speaker was Fr. Kevin Alban, Bursar General of the Order. He submitted an accurate report on the financial status of the Order during the last sexennium, highlighting the growing differences between the north and south of the Order and the challenges that will need to be confronted in the coming years due in part to the severe economic crisis that has hit especially Western countries. At the end of the report, an open debate was begun concerning the prospects for economic development of the Order.

In the afternoon, the capitulars listened to the report of Fr. Josef Jancár, Procurator General, in which he clearly and concisely described his work done over previous years, as well as the new changes in canon law. At the conclusion of his report, Fr. Josef Jancár, who arrives at the end of his tenure, sincerely thanked all the people who collaborated together with him in recent years.

After a short break, the work continued in groups organized by geographical area, each group having a chance to discuss the proposals on government that will be voted on in Wednesday’s session.

The day ended with a lectio divina in groups, on the text in Mark 1:32-35.

The regular meetings of the General Chapter were suspended today as the chapter held a Day of Retreat, conducted by Father Kees Waaijman, O. Carm., of the Dutch Province. Father Kees is an important and respected scholar in the area of scripture, mysticism and spirituality, the author of many books and articles. In two meditations morning and evening, he used Psalm 131 as his point of reflection. Carefully and skilfully aided by the use of power point, Father invited the capitulars to enter the world of the pilgrim in exile, waiting in hope for the Lord, seeking the word of salvation which is the word of hope. Using the image of the weaned child, he spoke of our learning, learning to wait on the Lord in a profound  hope and silence. He concluded with a reflection on Paul’s Letter to the Romans, Chapter 8, where the Christian is described as waiting in the Lord for the great things which we cannot imagine that God has prepared for us in Christ. A period of silent reflection followed each meditation.

At 7:00 PM, His Eminence, Cardinal Joao Braz de Aviz, Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life came to Sassone to celebrate the Eucharist with the members of the Chapter. After expressing his joy of being with us, the Cardinal encouraged us to have hope, as well as confidence and trust in one another as brothers, and to draw this hope from the life and charism we share within the Church and for the Lord. Afterwards, he joined all of the capitulars for supper.

The Chapter will return to its regular work tomorrow beginning with an evaluation of the decree on government from the last General Chapter, followed by voting on the proposals for government. In the evening, the Chapter will begin its discernment to prepare for the election of the Prior General and Council later in the week.

El tema de la sesión de la mañana de este día tuvo fue la economía. Para ello se invitó a la reunión para hablar al P. Thomas McClain, Ecónomo General de los Jesuitas. El ponente compartió algunas orientaciones sobre el significado de la pobreza en la actualidad. El tema presentado fue titulado "La pobreza y el papel del ecónomo hoy en día." En su informe se refirió a temas difíciles tales como: el papel del ecónomo y el significado que le damos hoy a los términos de pobreza y sencillez. Al final del informe, se abrió una discusión sobre el tema de la pobreza y sobre cómo estamos llamados a vivir como consagrados en la sociedad actual.

Concluida la primera parte de la mañana, los gremiales se reunieron en la sala de capítulo y en esta ocasión el orador fue el P. Kevin Alban, Ecónomo de la Orden. Él presentó un informe detallado sobre el sexenio económico de la Orden, destacando las crecientes diferencias entre el norte y el sur de la Orden y los desafíos que enfrentaremos en los próximos años, también a causa de la grave crisis económica que ha afectado especialmente a los países occidentales. Al final del informe se inició una discusión muy abierta acerca de las perspectivas de desarrollo económico de la Orden.

Por la tarde el capítulo en asamblea escucharon el informe del P. Josef Jancár, Procurador General, que describió en modo claro y conciso el trabajo realizado durante los últimos años y las novedades vigentes del derecho canónico. En la conclusión de su informe el P. Josef Jancár, al final de su mandato, agradeció con mucho sentimiento a todas las personas que, junto con él, han colaborado en los últimos años.

Después de una breve pausa, el trabajo continuó en grupos organizados en áreas geográficas, cada grupo tuvo la oportunidad de discutir las propuestas sobre el Gobierno que se someterán a votación en la sesión del día miércoles.

La Jornada concluyó con una Lectio Divina en grupos, reflexionando el pasaje de Marcos 1,32-35.

Las reuniones ordinarias del Capítulo General fueron suspendidas hoy al tener el capítulo su Día de Retiro, guiado por el Padre Kees Waaijman, O.Carm., de la Provincia de Holanda. El Padre Kees es un importante y respetado académico en el ámbito de la escritura, mística y espiritualidad, autor de muchos libros y artículos. Se centró en el salmo 131 como punto de reflexión en las dos meditaciones de la mañana y de la tarde. Valiéndose de presentaciones power point, el Padre invitó a los capitulares a entrar en el mundo del peregrino en el exilio, poniendo la esperanza en el Señor, buscando la palabra de salvación que es palabra de esperanza. Basándose en la imagen del niño destetado, habló de nuestro aprendizaje, aprendizaje para esperar en el Señor con una profunda esperanza y silencio. Llegó a la conclusión de que no podemos imaginar lo que Dios tiene preparado para nosotros en Cristo. Después de cada meditación se dejaba un tiempo de silenciosa reflexión.

A las 7,00 de la tarde el Excelentísimo Cardenal Joao Braz de Aviz, Prefecto de la Congregación para los Institutos de Vida Consagrada y Sociedades de Vida Apostólica, vino a Sassone para celebrar la eucaristía con los miembros del Capítulo. Después de expresar su alegría de estar con nosotros, el Cardenal nos exhortó a tener esperanza y también intimidad y confianza de unos con otros, y  a trazar esta esperanza desde la vida y carisma que compartimos en la Iglesia y para el Señor. Después, se unió a los capitulares para la cena.

El Capítulo volverá a su trabajo habitual mañana empezando con una valoración del decreto sobre el gobierno desde el último Capítulo General, seguida por la votación de las  propuestas del gobierno. Por la tarde el Capítulo comenzará su discernimiento para prepararse a la elección del Prior y Consejo General más adelante en la semana.

Capitolo Generale: 9 e10 settembre, 2013

L’argomento trattato nella sessione mattutina di questo giorno, ha avuto come tema l’economia. A questo proposito è stato invitato a parlare all’assemblea p. Tomas McClain, Economo Generale dei Gesuiti. Il relatore ha dato alcune indicazioni sul senso della povertà oggi. Il tema che ha presentato aveva per titolo: “Povertà e ruolo dell’Economo oggi”. Nella sua relazione ha toccato temi impegnativi quali: il ruolo dell’economo e il significato che diamo oggi ai termini povertà e semplicità. Al termine della relazione si è aperto un dibattito sul tema della povertà e su come siamo chiamati a viverla come consacrati nella società odierna.

Conclusa la prima parte della mattina, i capitolari si sono ritrovati in aula e questa volta il relatore è stato p. Kevin Alban, Economo dell’Ordine. Ha presentato una relazione accurata sul sessennio economico dell’Ordine, evidenziando la sempre maggiore differenza tra il nord e il sud dell’Ordine e le difficoltà che incontreremo nei prossimi anni anche a causa della forte crisi economica che ha colpito specialmente i paesi Occidentali. Al termine della relazione è iniziato un confronto molto aperto sulle prospettive di uno sviluppo economico dell’Ordine.

Nel pomeriggio i capitolari in assemblea hanno ascoltato la relazione di p. Josef Jancár, Procuratore Generale, che ha descritto in modo chiaro e sintetico il lavoro svolto in questi anni e le novità canoniche vigenti. A conclusione della sua relazione p. Josef Jancár, a scadenza del suo mandato, ha ringraziato sentitamente tutte le persone che, insieme a lui, hanno collaborato in questi anni.

Dopo una breve pausa il lavoro è continuato in gruppi divisi per aree geografiche, ogni gruppo ha avuto la possibilità di confrontarsi sulle proposte sul Governo che verranno votate nella sessione di mercoledì.

La giornata si conclude con una lectio divina in gruppi, sul testo di Marco 1, 32-35.

Oggi i lavori del Capitolo Generale sono stati sospesi per poter avere il ritiro di P. Kees Waaijman O. Car. della Provincia olandese. P. Kees è un accademico importante e rispettatole nell’area della Scrittura, del misticismo e della spiritualità. E’ autore di molti articoli e libri. Nelle due meditazioni, al mattino e al pomeriggio, ha preso il Salmi 131 come punto di riflessione. Con l’aiuto di una bella presentazione in Power Point, il padre ha invitato i capitolari ad entrare nel mondo del pellegrino in esilio, aspettando speranzamente il Signore, cercando la Parola di salvezza che è la parola di speranza. Usando l’immagine del bambino svezzato, egli ha parlato del nostro apprendimento, di come possiamo imparare ad aspettare il Signore in profonda speranza e in silenzio. Egli ha poi concluso con una riflessione sulla lettera di S. Paolo ai Romani cap. 8 dove il cristiano è descritto in attesa del Signore per grandi cose che noi non possiamo immaginare che Dio ha preparato per noi in Cristo. Ognuna di queste due riflessioni è stata seguita da una pausa di silenziosa riflessione.

Alle 7.00 pm Sua Eminanza il Card. Joao Braz de Aviz, prefetto per la Congregazione per gli Istituti di vita Consacrata e per le Società di Vita Apostolica, è venuto a Sassone per celebrare l’Eucarestia con i Capitolari. Dopo aver espresso la sua gioia di stare con noi, il Cardinale ci ha incoraggiati ad avere speranza ma anche fiducia tra di noi e raccogliere questa speranza dalla vita e dal carisma per condividerla con la Chiesa e per il Signore.

Domani il Capitolo ritornerà al suo lavoro ordinario iniziando con la valutazione del decreto sul governo proveniente dall’ultimo Capitolo Generale per poi votare sulle proposte per il governo. In serata il Capitolo inizierà il suo discernimento per preparare l’elezione del Priore Generale e poi del Consiglio.
