A Celebration of the 8th Centenary of the Death of St. Albert of Jerusalem
From the 10th to the 2th of October, 2014, at the St. Albert’s International Centre in Rome, a symposium was held, to celebrate the 8th Centenary of the death of St. Albert of Jerusalem. On the invitation of the General Council, some eighty people including friars, nuns, religious sisters and lay carmelites, from Rome and from farther afield, in Europe and in Brazil, took part in the event. The celebration opened on the 10th with Evening Prayer at which the Provost General of the Discalced Carmelites, Fr. Saverio Cannistrà, presided. The words of welcome were given by the Prior General, Fr. Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm. and the President of the Institutum Carmelitanum, Fr. Michael Plattig, O.Carm.
The morning of the 11th of October was taken up with the lectures given first by Fr. Vincenzo Mosca, O.Carm. (Neap) on the biography of St. Albert and on his role in relation to the Carmelite Order, and then by Fr. Kees Waaijman, O.Carm. (Neer) on “Silence and Work in the Carmelite Rule”, After these two conferences the participants went into groups to  reflect on the following themes:  The Rule and Research; The Rule and Pastoral Ministry; The Rule and Contemplation, and The Rule and the Carmelite Family.
In the afternoon, Bro. Patrick Mullins, O.Carm., (Hib) and Fr. Bruno Secondin, O.Carm. (Ita) responded to the two morning conferences and Sr. Anastasia of the Carmelite community of Ravenna (RAV) presented a summary of all that was said.
A particularly significant moment was the address given by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and successor of St. Albert, his Beatitude, Fouad Twal, who spoke about the situation of Christians in the Holy Land at the present time.
The Patriarch also led the celebration of the Eucharist on Sunday morning, the 12th of October in the Carmelite church of Santa Maria in Traspontina. The concelebrants included, the bishop of Stockholm in Sweden, Anders Arborelius, a Discalced Carmelite, and the two Priors General, Fernando and Saverio along with Carmelites from both branches of the Order.
A round-table made up of all the speakers, and chaired by the President of the Institutum Carmelitanum, as the final act of the syposium, brought out the various aspects of the role of St. Albert as law-giver, not only at the beginning but for all Carmelites who wish to live in the way that he set out as the foundation for Carmelite life in the “formula Vitae” written for the hermits on Mount Carmel.
At the end, the Prior General, Fr. Fernando thanked all the organisers for their work, and the members of the community of St. Albert’s International Centre for their hospitality which contributed handsomely to the success of the celebration, that took place in a spirit both of fraternity and of family.

Celebración del VIII Centenario de la muerte de San Alberto de Jerusalén
Del 10 al 12 de octubre de 2014 se ha desarrollado en el Centro Internacional San Alberto de Roma el seminario para celebrar el VIII Centenario de la muerte de San Alberto de Jerusalén. Respondiendo a la invitación del Consejo General de la Orden, participaron en el mismo unos ochenta frailes, monjas, hermanas y laicos carmelitas de Roma, de otros países de Europa y de Brasil. La apertura tuvo lugar el día 10 de octubre con el rezo de vísperas, presididas por el Prepósito General de los Carmelitas Descalzos, P. Saverio Cannistrà OCD, y con la bienvenida del Prior General, P. Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm., y del presidente del Institutum Carmelitanum, P. Michael Plattig O.Carm.
Durante la mañana del 11 de octubre los participantes escucharon las conferencias del P. Vincenzo Mosca, O.Carm. (Neap) sobre la biografía de San Alberto y su papel en la Orden, y del P. Kees Waaijman, O.Carm. (Neer) sobre “el silencio y el trabajo en la Regla”. Después de las conferencias, los participantes se dividieron en grupos de reflexión y diálogo sobre los siguientes aspectos: la Regla y la investigación, la Regla y el servicio pastoral, la Regla y el reto de la contemplación y la Regla y la Familia Carmelitana.
Por la tarda, Fray Patrick Mullins, O.Carm. (Hib) y el P. Bruno Secondin, O.Carm. (Ita) contestaron a los informes de la mañana; finalmente Sor Anastasia de Jerusalén, O.Carm. (RAV),  presentó la síntesis de las aportaciones.
La intervención del Patriarca Latino de Jerusalén y sucesor de San Alberto, Su Beatitud Fouad Twal, sobre la situación actual de los cristianos en Tierra Santa, constituyó un momento particularmente sugestivo.
Por la mañana del domingo 12 de octubre, el Patriarca presidió la eucaristía en la iglesia carmelitana de Santa María in Traspontina. Concelebraron Mons. Anders Arborelius OCD, obispo de Estocolmo, Suecia, y los dos Generales, PP. Fernando y Saverio, y otros carmelitas de ambas ramas.
Una mesa redonda de los conferenciantes, moderada por el Presidente del Institutum Carmelitanum, puso fin al seminario presentando varios aspectos del papel de San Alberto  como legislador, no sólo en lo que se refiere a los orígenes de la Orden, sino sobre todo para todos los  miembro de la familia carmelitana que procuran vivir todo lo que él estableció como fundamento de la vida carmelitana en la “formula vitae” dirigida a los eremitas del Monte Carmelo.
Finalmente, el Prior General, P. Fernando, dio las gracias a los organizadores por su dedicación, y también a los miembros de la comunidad del CISA, que con su hospitalidad y acogida tanto contribuyeron para que fuera adelante esta celebración, que se realizó con espíritu fraterno y familiar.

Celebrazione dell'VIII Centenario della morte di Sant'Alberto di Gerusalemme
Dal 10 al 12 ottobre 2014 si è svolto nel Centro Internazionale Sant' Alberto a Roma il seminario per celebrare l’VIII Centenario della morte di Sant’Alberto di Gerusalemme. Seguendo l'invito del Consiglio Generale dell’Ordine hanno partecipato un'ottantina di frati, monache, suore e laici carmelitani di Roma e provenienti da vari paesi d'Europa e dal Brasile. La celebrazione è stata aperta il 10 ottobre con i vespri, presieduti dal Preposito Generale dei Carmelitani Scalzi, P. Saverio Cannistrà OCD e con un benvenuto da parte del Priore Generale, P. Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm., e del preside dell'Institutum Carmelitanum, P. Michael Plattig O.Carm.
Durante la mattinata dell'11 ottobre i partecipanti hanno avuto modo di ascoltare le conferenze di P. Vincenzo Mosca, O.Carm. (Neap) sulla biografia di Sant'Alberto e sul suo ruolo per l'Ordine e quella di P. Kees Waaijman, O.Carm. (Neer) sul "Silenzio e lavoro nella Regola". Dopo queste relazioni i partecipanti si sono divisi in gruppi di riflessione e dialogo sui seguenti aspetti: La Regola e la ricerca, la Regola e il servizio pastorale, la Regola e la sfida della contemplazione e la Regola e la Famiglia Carmelitana.
Il pomeriggio Fra Patrick Mullins, O.Carm. (Hib) e P. Bruno Secondin, O.Carm. (Ita) hanno risposto alle relazioni della mattina. In seguito, Sr. Anastasia di Gerusalemme, O.Carm. (RAV) ha presentato una sintesi degli interventi.
Un momento particolarmente suggestivo è stato poi l'intervento del Patriarca Latino di Gerusalemme e successore di Sant'Alberto, Sua Beatitudine Fouad Twal, sulla situazione attuale dei cristiani in Terra Santa.
Il Patriarca ha anche presieduto l'eucaristia domenicale la mattina del 12 ottobre celebrata nella chiesa carmelitana di Santa Maria in Traspontina. Hanno concelebrato Mons. Anders Arborelius OCD, vescovo di Stoccolma in Svezia, i due Generali PP. Fernando e Saverio e frati carmelitani di entrambi rami.
Una tavola rotonda dei relatori, moderata dal Preside dell'Institutum Carmelitanum, ha concluso il seminario e mostrato i vari aspetti del ruolo di Sant'Alberto come legislatore, non solo riguardo alle origini dell'Ordine, ma soprattutto per tutti i membri della famiglia carmelitana che cercano di vivere quello che lui ha messo come fondamento della vita carmelitana nella "formula vitae" indirizzata gli eremiti del Monte Carmelo.
Infine, il Priore Generale, P. Fernando, ha ringraziato gli organizzatori per il loro impegno e i membri della comunità del CISA: con la loro ospitale accoglienza hanno contribuito molto alla riuscita della celebrazione, che si è svolta in uno spirito fraterno e familiare.
