Celebrations of the Opening of the 5th Centenary of St. Teresa
On the 14th and 15th of October last, the official opening of the 5th Centenary of the birth of St. Teresa of Jesus took place. On the 14th, in the birthplace of the saint, solemn vespers were celebrated, at which Fr. Saverio Canninstrà O.C.D. presided accompanied by the bishop of Avila, Jesus Garcia Burillo, and Fr. Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm. and this was followed by the Eucharist which marked the closing of the novena.
The Prior of Avila, Fr. David Jimenez, O.C.D. noted at the end of the Eucharist, that “the Saint from her place in heaven is sure to be rejoicing, because just as in 1567 she received a visit from Fr. Rubeo, today the two Carmelite generals are present.”
On the 15th, a solemn Eucharist was celebrated, led by Don Ricardo Blázquez, President of the Bishops’ Conference of Spain, along with several bishops and priests. The beautiful message sent by Pope Francis to the Bishop of Ávila was read as part of this celebration. Following the Eucharist there was a procession in which the statue of St. Teresa was carried through the streets of the city.
In addition, on the 15th of October, in the Monastery of the Incarnation in Alba de Tormes, (the eighth of Teresa’s foundations, and the place where she is buried) Fr. Desiderio Garcia, O.Carm., opened the solemn novena in honour of St. Teresa. The Carmelite community of the novitiate in San Andrés and the student community of the Discalced Carmelites of Salamanca, were given the job of carrying the statue and relics of St. Teresa in procession through the town of Alba de Tormes at the end of the solemn eucharist led by the bishop of Salamanca and attended by a large congregation of the faithful.
Pope Francis granted the grace of a “Teresian Jubilee Year”, for all the dioceses of Spain, beginning on the 15th of October 2014 and ending on the 15th of October, 2015, with a view to celebrating this 5th Centenary in the most solemn manner.

Celebraciones del inicio del V Centenario de Santa Teresa
Los pasados días 14 y 15 de octubre tuvieron lugar en Ávila los actos oficiales del comienzo del V Centenario del nacimiento de Santa Teresa de Jesús. El día 14, en la casa natal de la Santa, se celebraron las vísperas solemnes, presididas por el P. Saverio Cannistrà, OCD., acompañado del obispo de Ávila, Don Jesús García Burillo y del P. Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm., así como la eucaristía con la que terminaba la novena. El Prior de Ávila, P. David Jiménez, OCD., señaló al final de la eucaristía que “la Santa desde el cielo está muy contenta, porque igual que en 1567 fue visitada por el P. Rubeo, hoy también contamos con los dos generales del Carmelo”.
El día 15 tuvo lugar la solemne eucaristía, presidida por Don Ricardo Blázquez, Presidente de la Conferencia Episcopal española y por numerosos obispos y sacerdotes. En la misma fue leído el hermoso mensaje del Papa al Obispo de Ávila. Tras la eucaristía tuvo lugar la procesión que llevó la imagen de la Santa por las calles de la ciudad.
Asimismo, el día 15 de octubre, en el Monasterio de la Encarnación de Alba de Tormes (octava fundación teresiana y lugar donde reposa el cuerpo de la santa) el P. Desiderio García, O.Carm., dio comienzo al solemne novenario en honor de Santa Teresa. La comunidad Carmelita del noviciado de San Andrés y la comunidad de estudiantes Carmelitas Descalzos de Salamanca, fueron las encargados de sacar en solemne procesión la imagen y reliquias de Santa Teresa por la villa ducal de Alba de Tormes después de la misa solemne presidida por el Obispo de Salamanca y en la que participaron numerosos fieles.
El Papa Francisco ha concedido la gracia del “Año Jubilar Teresiano” para todas las diócesis de España, desde el 15 de octubre de 2014 hasta el 15 de octubre de 2015, con el fin de celebrar solemnemente este V Centenario.

Celebrazioni per l'inizio del V Centenario di Santa Teresa
Nei giorni 14 e 15 ottobre si sono svolte ad Avila le celebrazioni ufficiali per l’inizio del V Centenario della nascita di Santa Teresa di Gesù. Il 14, nella casa natale della Santa, si sono celebrati prima i vespri solenni presieduti da P. Saverio Cannistrà OCD, accompagnato dal vescovo di Avila, Don Jesús García Burillo, e da P. Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm., e, di seguito, l'eucaristia con cui si concludeva la novena. Il priore di Avila, P. David Jiménez OCD ha fatto osservare alla fine della celebrazione che "la Santa dal cielo sarà molto contenta, perché come nel 1567 fu visitata dal P. Rossi, anche oggi sono presenti i due Generali del Carmelo".
Il 15 ottobre si è celebrata un’imponente eucaristia, presieduta dal Presidente della Conferenza Episcopale spagnola, Don Ricardo Blázquez, con tanti vescovi e sacerdoti, durante la quale è stato letto il bel messaggio del Papa indirizzato per l’occasione al vescovo di Avila. Dopo l'eucaristia si è svolta per le strade della città una processione con l'immagine della Santa.
Sempre il 15 Padre Desiderio García, O.Carm., ha iniziato la novena solenne in onore di Santa Teresa nel Monastero dell'Incarnazione ad Alba de Tormes, l'ottava fondazione teresiana e luogo in cui riposa il corpo della Santa. Dopo la messa solenne presieduta dal vescovo di Salamanca e partecipata da tanti fedeli, la comunità carmelitana del noviziato di Sant’Andrea e la comunità degli studenti dei carmelitani scalzi di Salamanca hanno portato in processione l'immagine e le reliquie di Santa Teresa.
Papa Francesco ha concesso l'indulgenza per l’ "Anno Giubilare Teresiano" a tutte le diocesi della Spagna dal 15 ottobre 2014 al 15 ottobre 2015 al fine di celebrare solennemente questo V Centenario.
