The Celebration of the 150 Years of the Life of the PCM Province
This last 22nd to the 25th of October, in Leavenworth (Kansas, U.S.A.) a commemoration of the arrival 150 years ago of the first German Carmelites (Cyril Knoll and Xavier Huber)  in North America was celebrated. This was the first step in what would lead to the establishment of the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary (PCM). The celebrations included a variety of events. The participants were welcomed by the Pastor of Leavenworth, Fr. David McEvoy, O.Carm. on the banks of the river Missouri, where the Prior Provincial, Fr. William Harry, O.Carm. blessed a commemorative plaque and the Mayor of the city delivered an address in which he thanked the Carmelites for the work they have done throughout these years. A carriage parade began from there, recalling the journey of the first Carmelites, and moved to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, where all were welcomed by the archbishop, Joseph F. Naumann who led the celebration of the Thanksgiving Eucharist.
On the 23rd, the participants travelled to Scipio (KS) where they were given a presentation of the history and presence of Carmel in America by the Priors General, Falco Thuis, O.Carm., (who was not able to be present on account of ill health, but sent a video recording of his address), Fr. Joseph Chalmers, O.Carm., and Fr. Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm., who led the solemn celebration of the Eucharist. In the small local cemetery, the participants held a very moving moment of prayer by the graves of Carmelites who have been buried there during these 150 years.
The programme included important talks by the theologian, Joseph Schmidt, FSC, on Carmelite Spirituality for the 21st century, and the well-known journalist, and CNN’s Vatican expert, John Allen, whose spoke about the challenges that Pope Frances has been presenting to the Church and to the Carmelite Order in our time. Along with all that there was a concert given by the famous choral group called the Chanticleer.
In addition to the Prior General, the celebration was attended also by the Prior Provincial and the members of the General Curia who belong to this province, (Frs. Raul Maravi and Carl Markelz), the bishop emeritus of Sicuani, (Peru) Michael LaFay, O.Carm., the Prior Provincial of the North American Province of St. Elias, Mario Esposito, O.Carm., Bro. Günter Benker and Fr. Tobias Kraus, of the German province representing the “mother province” in the absence of the Prior Provincial who was indisposed, along with numerous Carmelites from various parts, all of whom enjoyed this wonderful celebration.

Celebración de los 150 años de la provincia PCM
Los pasados días 22 al 25 de octubre tuvieron lugar en Leavenworth (Kansas, Estados Unidos) los actos conmemorativos de los 150 años de la llegada de los dos primeros carmelitas alemanes a Norteamérica (Cyril Knoll y Xavier Huber), dando así los primeros pasos de lo que acabaría siendo la Provincia del Purísimo Corazón de María (PCM). Las celebraciones han incluido actos muy diversos. Los participantes fueron recibidos por el párroco de Leavenworth, P. David McEvoy, O.Carm., en la orilla del rio Missouri, donde el Prior Provincial, P. William Harry, O.Carm., bendijo una placa conmemorativa y el alcalde de la ciudad tuvo unas palabras de agradecimiento a los carmelitas por su labor durante estos años. Allí comenzó el desfile conmemorativo en carroza (imitando el viaje de los primeros carmelitas) hasta nuestra iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción, donde fueron recibidos por el arzobispo, Monseñor Joseph F. Naumann que presidió la eucaristía de acción de gracias.
El día 23, los participantes en la celebración viajaron a Scipio (KS), donde tuvo lugar una presentación sobre el Carmelo en América de los priores generales: P. Falco Thuis, O.Carm., (que no pudo estar presente por motivos de salud, pero que mandó un video con su intervención), P. Joseph Chalmers, O.Carm., y el P. Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm., que presidió posteriormente la solemne eucaristía. En el pequeño cementerio de la localidad, los participantes tuvieron un emotivo momento de oración junto a las tumbas de los carmelitas allí enterrados durante estos 150 años.
Los actos han incluido sendas conferencia del teólogo Joseph Schmidt, FSC, sobre la espiritualidad carmelita para el siglo XXI y del conocido periodista John Allen, experto vaticanista de la CNN, que habló sobre los retos del Papa Francisco para la Iglesia y el Carmelo de nuestro tiempo. Asimismo hubo un concierto del famoso grupo coral Chanticleer.
Además del Prior General, del Prior provincial y de los dos miembros de la Curia pertenecientes a esta provincia (los PP. Raúl Maraví y Carl Markelz), estuvieron presentes el obispo emérito de Sicuani, Perú (Monseñor Michael La Fay, O.Carm.), el P. Mario Esposito, Provincial de la otra provincia norteamericana (San Elías), Fr. Günter Benker y P. Tobias Kraus, los dos carmelitas alemanes que representaron a la “provincia madre” (el Provincial no pudo asistir por motivo de salud) y numerosos carmelitas de diversa procedencia que gozaron de esta estupenda celebración.

Celebrazione dei 150 anni della Provincia PCM
Dal 22 al 25 ottobre si sono svolti a Leavenworth, Kansas, Stati Uniti, le celebrazioni per il 150° anniversario dell'arrivo dei primi due carmelitani tedeschi, i PP. Cyril Knoll e Xaver Huber, in America del Nord, dando così inizio a quella che oggi è la Provincia del Purissimo Cuore di Maria (PCM). La celebrazione si è articolata in vari momenti. I partecipanti sono stati accolti dal parroco di Leavenworth, P. David McEvoy, O.Carm., sulla riva del fiume Missouri, dove il Priore Provinciale, P. William Harry, O.Carm., ha benedetto una pietra commemorativa e il sindaco della città ha espresso la sua gratitudine per il lavoro dei carmelitani durante tutti questi anni. Subito dopo è iniziata una parata commemorativa con una carrozza, che ricordava il viaggio dei primi carmelitani, fino alla nostra chiesa dell'Immacolata Concezione. Lì sono stati accolti dall'arcivescovo Mons. Joseph F. Naumann che ha presieduto l'eucaristia di ringraziamento.
Il 23 ottobre i partecipanti si sono spostati a Scipio, Kansas, dove si sono tenute conferenze dei Priori Generali sul Carmelo in America. Sono intervenuti P. Falco Thuis, che non poteva essere presente per motivi di salute, ha mandato un video con il suo intervento, P. Joseph Chalmers e P. Fernando Millán Romeral. Quest'ultimo ha presieduto anche l'eucaristia. Nel piccolo cimitero locale i partecipanti hanno tenuto un commovente momento di preghiera davanti alle tombe dei carmelitani sepolti durante questi 150 anni.
Durante le celebrazioni sono state tenute conferenze del teologo Joseph Schmidt, FSC, sulla spiritualità carmelitana per il XXI secolo, e del noto giornalista John Allen, esperto vaticanista della CNN, che ha parlato delle sfide di Papa Francesco per la Chiesa e per il Carmelo del nostro tempo. La giornata è stata anche allietata da un concerto del famoso gruppo corale Chanticleer.
Oltre al Priore Generale, al Priore Provinciale e ai membri della Curia provenienti da questa provincia, i PP. Raúl Maraví e Carl Markelz, hanno partecipato il vescovo emerito di Sicuani in Perù, Mons. Michael La Fay, O.Carm., P. Mario Esposito, Priore Provinciale dell'altra provincia nordamericana di Sant'Elia e Fra Günter Benker e P. Tobias Kraus, due carmelitani tedeschi che hanno rappresentato la "provincia madre" e il priore provinciale che non ha potuto partecipare per motivi di salute. Insieme a loro hanno gioito di questa bellissima celebrazione numerosi carmelitani provenienti da vari luoghi.
