Message to the Order
Re the Coronavirus

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
on this rare occasion I want to address a word of support to all our members who in one way or another are affected by the continuing spread of Covid-19. Here in the Curia we have heard the instructions of the Italian government and we have done our best to follow all the instructions. This has meant saying to our staff that they should not come to work until further instructions. We have organized our life in such a way that none of us will have people coming to the house and no one will leave the house until the ban is lifted, except for emergencies and essential services. We recognize the sacrifice that this entails, but we feel that we have to allow ourselves to be guided by the advice of the experts.

We will keep in our thoughts and prayers, those who have died and their families who are in mourning. We will pray for the medical profession, that the researchers may succeed in identifying this virus and finding the best ways to protect the population from infection, and the doctors and nurses may be able to help all who have fallen victim to it.

We must not allow ourselves to lose confidence or to be gripped by fear. This experience may lead us to reflect on how powerless we are, despite all our progress. At moments like this we realize more clearly that without God, we can do nothing. It is a good moment for us to renew our faith in God and our commitment to the wellbeing of one another, and in a special way our care for the poor, for the ones who are least able to cope when life gets difficult. In the time that we spend confined to our homes, we may find ourselves thinking and praying more, at one with Mary the Mother of God who kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.

Mensaje a la Orden referente al Coronavirus

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

en la situación especial que vivimos quiero dirigir una palabra de apoyo a todos nuestros hermanos que de algún modo sufren el dolor de la constante difusión del virus Covid-19. En la Curia hemos acogido las instrucciones del Gobierno italiano y hacemos cuanto podemos para cumplirlas. Esto ha supuesto decir a nuestro personal que deje de venir a trabajar hasta que recibamos nuevas instrucciones. Hemos organizado nuestra vida, de manera que ninguno acogerá a nadie en casa ni la abandonará hasta que haya sido revocada la prohibición, exceptuando las emergencias y los servicios básicos. Reconocemos el sacrificio que esto comporta, pero creemos que hemos de dejarnos guiar por los consejos de los expertos.

Tenemos presentes en nuestra mente y en nuestra oración a los que han muerto y a sus familias que sufren. Rezaremos por todos los que trabajan en el campo de la sanidad, para que los investigadores consigan identificar este virus y hallen la mejor manera de proteger a la población de la infección, y también para que los médicos y enfermeros consigan ayudar a todas las víctimas.

No hemos de perder la confianza ni dejarnos dominar por el miedo. Esta experiencia nos lleva a considerar hasta qué punto somos impotentes, a pesar de nuestros progresos. En situaciones como ésta nos damos cuenta con mayor claridad de que sin Dios no podemos hacer nada. Tenemos, pues, ocasión propicia para renovar nuestra fe en Dios y nuestro compromiso de cara al bienestar recíproco y especialmente nuestra solicitud por los pobres, los que tienen menos posibilidades cuando la vida se hace difícil. Durante el tiempo que permanezcamos confinados en nueras casas podemos reunirnos para reflexionar y para orar más, como María, la Madre de Dios, que guardaba todas estas cosas meditándolas en su corazón.

Messaggio all'Ordine riguardo il Coronavirus

Cari fratelli e sorelle,
in questa situazione particolare desidero rivolgere una parola di sostegno a tutti i nostri membri che in qualche modo sono colpiti dalla continua diffusione del virus Covid-19. Qui in Curia abbiamo accolto le istruzioni del Governo italiano e abbiamo fatto del nostro meglio per seguirle tutte. Ciò ha significato dire al nostro personale di non venire al lavoro fino a quando non verranno comunicate ulteriori istruzioni. Abbiamo organizzato la nostra vita in modo tale che nessuno accoglierà persone in casa e nessuno lascerà la casa fino a quando il divieto non sarà revocato, ad eccezione delle emergenze e dei servizi essenziali. Riconosciamo il sacrificio che ciò comporta, ma sentiamo di doverci lasciar guidare dai consigli degli esperti.

Abbiamo presenti nei nostri pensieri e nelle nostre preghiere coloro che sono morti e le loro famiglie in lutto. Pregheremo per tutti coloro che lavorano nel campo medico, affinché i ricercatori possano riuscire a identificare questo virus e trovare i modi migliori per proteggere la popolazione dalle infezioni e affinché medici e infermieri possano essere in grado di aiutare tutti coloro che ne sono vittime.

Non dobbiamo permetterci di perdere la fiducia o di essere presi dalla paura. Questa esperienza può portarci a riflettere su quanto siamo impotenti, nonostante tutti i nostri progressi. In momenti come questo ci rendiamo conto più chiaramente che senza Dio non possiamo fare nulla. È un buon momento per noi per rinnovare la nostra fede in Dio e il nostro impegno per il benessere reciproco e, in modo particolare, la nostra cura per i poveri, per coloro che sono meno in grado di farcela quando la vita diventa difficile. Nel tempo che trascorriamo chiusi nelle nostre case, possiamo trovarci a pensare e pregare di più, come Maria, la Madre di Dio, che ha tenuto tutte queste cose e le ha meditate nel suo cuore.
