Celebrating at Home: What is the Kingdom of God Like?

11th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Parables are meant to leave the hearers wondering. They are not straight-forward answers to questions. They are food for thought. By using parables Jesus is trying to engage his listeners at a deeper level. He wants his teaching to seize their hearts. He wants them to discover the truth of what he is saying for themselves. It is part of the business of conversion - coming to see with new eyes.

In Mark’s Gospel the Kingdom is not something yet to come, it is a present reality. It is the presence and action (reign) of God among his people. That may not always been readily seen, but it is there none the less. It may seem to have humble beginnings (like the small seed in the second parable), but the experience of it grows into something all-consuming.

Le parabole hanno lo scopo di suscitare in coloro che ascoltano degli interrogativi. Non rispondono in modo diretto a una domanda, quanto piuttosto interpellano l'intelligenza lasciandola pensosa. Ricorrendo alle parabole, egli cerca di raggiungere i suoi ascoltatori a un livello più profondo.

Nel vangelo di Marco il regno non è qualcosa prossima a venire, bensì realtà già presente. È la presenza e l'opera (il regno) di Dio in mezzo al suo popolo. Ciò può non essere subito chiaro, eppure è reale. Può apparire un inizio alquanto modesto (come il granello della seconda parabola), ma l'esperienza che suscita si dilata in qualcosa di totalizzante.

Celebrando em Família: Com o que podemos comparar o Reino de Deus?

Décimo Primerio Domingo do Tempo Comum

As parábolas são colocadas para que nos oriente e questionem. Não são respostas diretas às perguntas. São elementos dereflexão. Usando as parábolas, Jesus tenta envolver seus ouvintes em um nível mais profundo. Ele quer que seus ensinamentos tomem conta de seus corações. Ele quer que eles descubram por si mesmos a verdade do que ele diz. Isso faz parte da conversão: ver com novos olhos.

No Evangelho de Marcos, o Reino não é algo por vir, é uma realidade presente: é a presença e ação de Deus no meio de seu povo. Pode nem sempre ser facilmente visto, mas está lá de qualquer maneira. Pode parecer teve um começo humilde (como a pequena semente da segunda parábola), mas sua experiência se torna algo que o consome todo.
