70th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Blessed Titus Brandsma
The 26th of July of this year, 2012, will be the 70th anniversary of the martyrdom of Blessed Titus Brandsma. His life was an example of a very close relationship between a mystical life and a firm commitment in the world to the dignity of the human person. He was noted for his readiness to receive anyone in difficulty and to help in whatever way he could.
In the period leading up to and during the Nazi occupation in Holland, he argued passionately against the National Socialist ideology, basing his stand on the Gospels, and he defended the right to freedom, in education and for the Catholic Press. This led to his imprisonment. So began his Calvary, which brought him great personal suffering and degradation whilst, at the same time, he himself brought solace and comfort to the other internees and begged God's blessing on his jailers. In the midst of such inhuman suffering, he possessed the precious ability to bring an awareness of goodness, love and peace. He passed from one prison or camp to another until finally he arrived in Dachau where he was killed on 26th July 1942. He was beatified as a martyr by Pope John Paul II on the 3rd of November, 1985.

El día 26 de julio de 2012 se cumplen 70 años del martirio del Beato Tito Brandsma.
Su vida ofrece un ejemplo de correlación entre vida mística y compromiso con el mundo en defensa de la dignidad del hombre. Fue conocido por su disponibilidad para con todos y en todo.
Ya antes y también durante la ocupación nazi de Holanda, luchó con fuerza y con fidelidad al Evangelio contra la propagación de la ideología nacionalsocialista y defendió la libertad de la enseñanza y de la prensa católica. Por esto fue arrestado. Comenzaba así su calvario de sufrimientos y humillaciones, mientras infundía serenidad y daba consuelo a los demás deportados y los ayudaba en sus sufrimientos. En medio de atroces tormentos, supo comunicar el bien, el amor y la paz. Después de pasar por varias cárceles y campos, al final fue internado en el de Dachau, donde fue asesinado el 26 de julio de 1942. Fue proclamado beato mártir por Juan Pablo II el 3 de noviembre de 1985.

Il prossimo 26 luglio 2012 ricorre il 70° anniversario del martirio del Beato Tito Brandsma.
La sua vita è esempio di una stretta interrelazione tra vita mistica e impegno nel mondo a favore della dignità dell’uomo. Fu noto per la sua disponibilità verso tutti e in tutto.
Prima e durante l'occupazione nazista dell'Olanda, egli lottò, con forza e con fedeltà al Vangelo, contro il diffondersi delle ideologie nazionalsocialiste e difese la libertà delle scuole e della stampa cattolica. Per questo venne arrestato. Cominciava così il suo calvario di sofferenze e di umiliazioni, mentre infondeva serenità e conforto agli altri deportati e beneficava gli stessi aguzzini. In tanti atroci tormenti, seppe comunicare il bene, l'amore e la pace. Passato in vari carceri e lager, alla fine fu internato a Dachau ove, il 26 luglio 1942, fu ucciso. E' stato proclamato beato martire dal b. Giovanni Paolo II il 3 novembre 1985.
