Saint Simon Stock, Religious

As far as can be ascertained from the earliest references, Simon Stock was an English Prior General, known for his holy way of life, who died about 1265 in Bordeaux in France. After his death, miracles were recorded by those visiting his tomb and during the 14th century a local cult developed in Bordeaux.

Around 1400, a separate legend emerged in the Low Countries of a "holy Simon" who had a vision of Our Lady, in which she appeared to him bearing the scapular and promised: "This is a privilege for you and your brethren: whoever dies wearing it, will be saved." Within a few years, the two accounts had been merged and Simon Stock, the Prior General, was credited with having the vision of Our Lady.

Por cuanto resulta de las "noticias" más antiguas, Simón Stock fue un Prior General inglés, venerado por su santidad, y muerto hacia el 1265 en Bordeaux, Francia. Después de su muerte, los peregrinos que visitaban su tumba, contaban sus milagros, dando así en el siglo XIV el comienzo de un culto local.

Hacia el siglo XV, en los Países Bajos, surgió una leyenda sobre un cierto "San Simón" que había tenido una visión de la Virgen, en la cual apareció con el escapulario prometiéndole: "Este es un privilegio para tí y para los tuyos: el que muera vistiéndolo se salvará". En pocos años, las dos narraciones se unieron y a Simón Stock, el Prior General, se le acreditó la visión de la Virgen.

Per quanto risulti dalle "notizie" più antiche, Simone Stock fu un Priore Generale inglese, venerato per la sua santità, e morto verso il 1265 a Bordeaux in Francia. Dopo la sua morte, i pellegrini che visitarono la sua tomba hanno registrato i suoi miracoli, dando così nel sec. XIV inizio ad un culto locale.

Verso il sec. XV, nei Paesi Bassi, emerse una leggenda circa un certo "San Simone" che aveva avuto una visione della Nostra Signora, nella quale Lei gli appariva con lo scapolare promettendogli: "Questo è il privilegio per te e per i tuoi: chiunque morirà rivestendolo, sarà salvo." In pochi anni, i due racconti furono uniti e a Simone Stock, il Priore Generale, fu accreditata la visione della Nostra Signora.
